Honors Program

An honors program is offered for eligible students who wish to work with a faculty member on a research or program development project. Participants graduate with honors and receive special recognition on their diploma and transcript. Students participate in seminars for honors students, and develop, carry out, and present the results of a research project under the direction of a professor.

HDFS Honors Projects

In recent years, the department has had up to seven students each year complete an honors project. Honors project results have been published in scholarly journals and presented as papers at meetings of professional organizations. Students have examined a number of areas including:

  • teachers' roles in early childhood classrooms
  • parental beliefs and behaviors associated with children's school readiness
  • family socialization of religious beliefs and values
  • factors associated with the longevity of long-distance dating relationships in college
  • victimization and college adjustment
