Areas of Interest

Early childhood development, training child care providers, parenting education, preschool curriculum, development in literacy and math, marriage and relationships, family systems – especially the family life cycle stages

A new interest area that I want to explore is aging and end of life decisions

Barbara Beaulieu is a new Human Development Extension Specialist in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, as of July 2013. Earlier this year, she moved to Indiana after many years in Florida. Being at Purdue and in Extension is not entirely new for her. Barbara was a 4-Her in Indiana, and worked summers with the State 4-H office while a student at Purdue University working on her baccalaureate degree in Home Economics Vocational Education. She completed her Master’s degree in Extension Education at the University of Florida, where she also took additional classes towards a doctorate degree in Educational Media and Instructional Design. In Florida, Barbara was a Home Economics Extension County Agent, worked on a grant in the state Extension Home Economics Department, and was employed in media production for educational programs for Extension.

Barbara’s commitment to families and early childhood education has allowed her to teach high school, be a childcare center director at three preschools located within secondary and post-secondary programs, and be a trainer for the Florida Department of Education and Florida Department of Children and Families. She has also served as a training consultant with an early childhood curriculum company and conducted curriculum training around the US. For the last six years, Barbara was a county coordinator for Florida’s Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program which had an enrollment of about 1,900 children. She completed monitoring visits in over 120 four-year-old classrooms each year, and provided training to the VPK classroom teachers and center directors. Barbara has served as an Education Specialist with Head Start and Early Head Start. She has also taught upper level courses at Mississippi State University and Mississippi University for Women. Barbara has been actively involved in professional organizations over the years and has received recognition and awards linked to Extension and child development efforts.
