Exploring with Professor Popcorn

We know that youth establish lifelong food, nutrition and physical activity habits during their early years. Evidence also suggests that well-nourished children are more likely to perform better in school, as they have more energy to stay alert and engage in learning. Exploring with Professor Popcorn is a curriculum for youth in grades 1-6. Five lessons are taught, one per week, typically in a classroom setting. Lessons provide nutrition and health information, and an opportunity to practice new skills.

Topics include:

  • Nutrition basics
  • Physical activity
  • Dietary Guidelines for Americans
  • Fight Bac! Concepts of Clean, Separate, Cook and Chill

Making a Difference

In 2012, the program was taught in 63 counties to over 27,000 youth. After participating in the program, youth report:
  • Increased practice of one or more healthy food selection habits
  • Increased practice of healthy physical activity habits
  • increased knowledge of health food choices and food preparation
  • increased knowledge of food safety
