Sally Harmon

Sally Harmon is no stranger to Purdue University. She completed her undergraduate degree in Vocational Home Economics and her MS degree in Retail Management, focusing her studies on training and development in the workforce.  After spending 5 years within the industry, Sally’s return trip to the West Lafayette campus has lasted for 27 years, where her responsibilities include teaching and supervising field experiences, academic advising, developing professional/career events, and engaging with industry partners regarding campus visits, internships, and full-time opportunities for our undergraduates.

Her educational background has made her a proponent of transformative learning.  As a result she has developed what she calls “Out of the Red Brick Classroom” experiences.  These include the development and implementation of study groups to New York City and Europe, as well as to professional events such as Shop.org Student Summit, Globalshop tradeshow, and the Fashion Group International Career day regional sales competitions and embedded course field trips.

She is always looking for avenues for students to learn more about themselves and their professions. One of these unique avenues was initiating the student design competition for the development of the Purdue University Tartan.

Outside of the department, Sally has been involved with university organizations such as APSAC, PACADA and the CFS Alumni Association.  She served as a faculty fellow in Windsor Halls.  Currently she is involved with the Purdue Career Advising Council, the Center for Career Opportunities Partnership Council and is the advisor to the Purdue Retail Organization.  She has held a variety of leadership positions with community based organizations.
