4 Years to Career Success: Steps to Explore your Major & Interests

Start planning your future success today by exploring your interests, trying different classes, learning about your major and deciding your career plans. When you have questions, HHS is here to guide you along the way. Here are a few ideas to help you start your career planning during your college experience. 

Freshmen

  • Discover your interests through student organizations or volunteer opportunities  
  • Explore career options with your major and talk to individuals working in careers of interest
  • Create a career plan and consider study abroad options
  • Join HHS Career Development on Facebook
  • Find campus employment and part-time jobs to gain work experience
  • Visit the Center for Career Opportunities (CCO) and create myCCO account
  • Develop resume displaying Purdue education and new experiences
  • Attend career fairs and information sessions to know what to expect next year

Sophomores

  • Review your career interests and adjust career plan as needed
  • Begin to research qualifications for graduate school or professional programs
  • Consider leadership roles and take on projects in student organizations
  • Update resume and myCCO profile with summer experience
  • Create LinkedIn account and build your profile
  • Join Purdue HHS Career Development group on LinkedIn
  • Participate in alumni meet & greet or networking events
  • Attend job fair preparation workshop
  • Attend fall and spring career fairs to secure summer internship or research experience

Juniors

  • Update your resume and LinkedIn profile
  • Review career plan and discuss with career consultant or advisor 
  • Expand your network through information sessions and career/graduate fairs
  • Attend fall and spring career fairs to secure next summer internship or research
  • Consider research with faculty in area of interest
  • Develop quality relationships with faculty and employers for references
  • Practice your interview skills for internships or graduate school process
  • Research graduate school or professional programs
  • Prepare for graduate school admissions exams at end of summer, if choosing further studies
  • Utilize HHS Career Development on Facebook & LinkedIn

Seniors

  • Review career plan and decide on full-time employment or advanced studies
  • Create timeline for career plan to accomplish necessary steps; start two semesters out
  • Update resume according to future goal; have one for job search and one for advanced studies reviewed and ready to go
  • Develop your personal brand and practice providing examples of your strengths, interests, values and abilities
  • Polish your cover letter or personal statement; make sure your brand is communicated
  • Identify best job resources, such as myCCO for on-campus interview and job postings, HHS Careers Development and Career Wiki
  • Set aside time each week to look for employment or research graduate programs
  • Determine best references for career plan and meet with references/mentors to discuss career plans
  • Utilize HHS Career Development on Facebook and LinkedIn
  • Complete First Destination Survey to let HHS know your future plans
