Sponsored Internship and Study Abroad in China

The internship program combines study abroad, professional training, and cultural experience in a 6-month program at one of the following five-star hotels:

InterContinental Hotel

Shangri-La Hotel

Just imagine yourself living and learning in a country blessed with over 5,000 years of history! This program continually adds more exciting internship destinations.

The program is financially supported by corporate sponorship that provides funds for international airfare, room and board, and a stipend.  The total value of the corporate support is $32,400 per each student sponsored.

The program features 12 credit hours, all within a six-month period. These credits can be applied to your plan of study. For HTM students, the credits can be counted towards the HTM International Minor. Please talk with your academic advisors to discuss how the program best fits in your plan of study and the minor.

The program offers internship positions in the front office, food and beverage, customer service, marketing, and housekeeping. During the internship, you will be enrolled in the following classes:


  • HTM 39800 or CSR 39800, 4 credits, International Special Topics China
  • HTM 30200 or CSR 39800, 2 credits, HTM or CSR Internship
  • CHNS 10100, 4 credits, Chinese Level 1
  • CHNS 39900, 2 credits, Business Chinese for Hotels

HTM and CSR classes are taught by HTM professor on site and through online instruction.  CHNS classes are taught by a Purdue-accredited instructor.

Eligibility and Application

Students of all majors in the College of Health and Human Sciences are eligible to apply. Applications for HTM, CSR, and HK students are strongly encouraged. Purdue's Study Abroad office's requirements apply. Download the application.

InternsStudents who want to participate in this program should submit their application immediately due to the competitive nature and generous corporate support of the program.  An interview usually takes place within two weeks of receiving the application. Offers are made to qualified students within a week of the interview. Space is limited, and will close when the program’s capacity has been reached.

Fall 2013: May - November

Cost

The total cost to each student for the program is approximately $7,004*. The amount includes Purdue Study Abroad program fees, tuition, and international insurance. Purdue corporate sponsors pay for the student's international airfare, room and board, and stipend.

* The rate is subject to change by Purdue University due to changes in program expense, tuition, and fees.
