What advice do you have for a first year student?

My advice is to start off your college career right by being organized. Each professor has a different schedule, but most leave it up to you to remember when homework is due and when quizzes and exams will be given. In my experience, college is a lot less overwhelming if you just keep everything in order.

What is the most fun activity you've done at Purdue?

The most fun activity I have done in my time here at Purdue would be going through sorority formal recruitment my freshman year and joining a sorority. It was such a great experience because I met so many different people who I will remain friends with for the rest of my time here at Purdue. Going Greek is a great way to get involved on campus, raise money for charities, and develop friendships that will last a lifetime. I highly suggest going Greek to all freshmen who decide to come to Purdue.

What advice do you have for a first year student?

Remember you're coming for schooling which should always be number one, but take advantage of the opportunities Purdue has to offer students. It's a great way to meet other students on campus with similar personalities, as well as make such a large campus seem like a small town place. You will love every minute if you are excited about everything Purdue has to offer!

What will you miss about Purdue when you graduate?

What I will miss most about Purdue are all the countless places across campus to take a well-needed nap. My favorite napping location is on the benches next to Loeb fountain when the weather is beautiful. It's the best when you get equal sunshine and cool mist from the fountain.

Why did you choose to attend Purdue?

When I was little, my family took me to a Purdue football game starring Drew Brees and the team's triumph over Michigan. I had never realized the significance at the time, but ever since then I've been a Purdue fan at heart. It's an amazing school on a beautiful, safe campus and I truly believe Purdue will be the reason I get to where I want to be in life.

What will you miss about Purdue when you graduate?

I'm going to miss seeing all the hard working people around campus. Purdue is a great academic atmosphere and I will surely miss knowing that I'm surrounded by people who are working just as hard as me to achieve a goal. That energy is contagious and I'm going to miss having that to motivate me.

I have spent some amazing years living here and enjoying everything about Purdue with these girls!

What did you learn from your study abroad adventure?

I learned that to truly learn about a culture one has to immerse themselves by interacting with locals and going out of one's comfort box. Take advantage of any opportunities that pop up such as sightseeing, meeting new people, shopping and learning about the culture, as time goes by without you even realizing.

I chose to attend Purdue because I fell in love with the campus when I was a young girl. I started coming to Purdue when I was in middle school for summer camps. What is the most fun activity you've done at Purdue?

Purdue offers over 900 student organizations that cover an unbelieveably broad range of interests. It has always been fun attending the numerous activity fairs across campus looking at possibilities for involvement that had never before crossed my mind. My freshman year I joined Purdue's rowing team -- it was a totally new sport to me, but crew has enabled me to train for and participate in regattas across the country, given me lifelong friendships, and helped develop lifelong benefits like time management and personal nutrition.

The thing I will miss most about Purdue when I graduate will be all of my friends and the Purdue football games. It is fun seeing all the friends I have made since freshman year around campus on a daily basis. The atmosphere and Purdue pride around campus on game days is something I think is extra special at Purdue and something I will definitely keep coming back to be a part of!

What is your dream job?

My dream job is to do event planning for a children's hospital or to start my own event planning company that supports non-profit organizations. While at Purdue I have been involved with Purdue University Dance Marathon, which is a club that fundraises throughout the entire year to support Riley Hospital for Children. Also, with HHS Student Council, I have had the opportunity to participate in a lot of community service work, which has often involved working with nonprofit organizations. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with these clubs and would love to take what I have learned in HTM and someday turn my passion into a career!

What is the most fun activity you've done at Purdue?

Since I have been at Purdue, I have had lots of fun memories with my friends. One of my favorite activities was a paint war photo shoot. A group of about 15 of us had an idea of having a paint war after one of our friends had house paint left over. So we gathered up gallons of house paint and some paint brushes and had a paint war! In addition to it, we wore all white, so that we can see all the different paint colors. Our friends who were photographers took pictures of our war. It was definitely a blast!

Time management is key. It’s extremely important to schedule time to study and utilize your time wisely. There are so many fun and exciting things to do in college but without time management it’s tough to fit it all in.

What is your favorite class?

Elementary Psychology (PSY120). Despite the bias that my major is psychology I just felt that the class in general was so interesting and the professor I had did a fantastic job at making the material fun and interesting. That helped motivate me to actually want to attend that class as well as getting me really excited for my major. It was so interesting and definitely worth taking in my opinion.

What is your dream job?

I have a couple of dream jobs, actually. One of my dream jobs would be to work in a Christian counseling center to help families, couples, and parents improve their relationships with one another. I would especially love to help parents learn how to best parent perhaps difficult/challenged children. Another dream job is to work at a large university as an academic adviser.

Muhammad, Sarah

Sarah Muhammad

Year: Sophomore
Major: Dietetics
Hometown: Chicago, IL
E-mail: muhammas@purdue.edu

Why did you choose to attend Purdue?

I chose to attend Purdue because it is a school of excellent merit and the moment that I stepped foot on Purdue's campus the fall before my freshmen year, I knew it was where I belonged. I did not feel the same welcome at other prospective universities. Outside of Purdue’s nationally top-ranked didactic dietetics program, there was a number of other things for me to get involved in such as: HHS Ambassadors, Nutrition Society, The Black Cultural Center, volunteering on and off campus and so forth. Purdue is really helping to make me not only a better student and scholar, but an active leader.

What did you learn from your study abroad adventure?

Study abroad itself was a huge challenge for me because I had never been outside of the country before. I learned so much about other cultures and honestly a lot about myself. It taught me that it is okay to try different things and that the "American" way is not the only way to do things. I was able to try the authentic cuisine of 4 different countries and step foot in historic landmarks that many people wish to see in their lives. The whole experience has left me with memories that I will never forget, and a larger perspective on the many cultures in the world.

Overpeck, Elizabeth

Elizabeth Overpeck

What did you find beneficial about your internship?

What I found most beneficial from my international internship was the experience in a completely different culture. I worked in the Shangri-La luxury hotel in Qingdao, China, and it was my first time being in an Asian environment. I learned a new language and am continuing my studies currently at Purdue. I now have international relations and work experience with people who, initially, I had no idea how to interact with...I definitely became more patient! In the end, my experience changed me as a person and altered my thinking on cultural aspects in my daily life.”

What did you find beneficial about your internship?

This summer I had the privilege of working for CPIP here at Purdue and what I found most beneficial was applying what I have learned in the classroom to real life problems. It is one thing to learn about cancer progression in a text book, but its completely different actually seeing this process in living organisms.

What you’ll learn from your study abroad experience is not only the new culture you’re diving into, but it’s also the things you discover about yourself. What should a prospective student know about Purdue?

Purdue’s orientation program is awesome, providing incoming students an easy and stress-free transition to University life. New students meet so many people and experience the campus before the school year even begins. I didn’t know any incoming students when I arrived as a nervous freshman from Wisconsin and this program put me at ease and made Purdue feel like home.

I would have to say that Anatomy and Physiology (BIO203/204) has been my favorite class. I've always been really drawn to the human body and it was so neat to see how our bodies are affected at such a molecular level. The lab also allowed me to have a better physical understanding of the material. Once we even conducted experiments on frog muscles! I liked this class so much that I was a TA for it.

What did you find beneficial about your internship?

This summer, I had the great opportunity to have an internship at the Indiana University School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatric Research. I found that my internship allowed me to explore a different aspect of my career path that I had not previously thought about research. Most of the time when we think of the medical field, we think of doctors and nurses, we don’t think about medical assistants, laboratory scientists, and of course researchers. Much of the knowledge that doctors have come from research. It was exciting for me to learn about this different aspect. I found myself involved in areas of research I would have never imagined including holding, feeding, caring for live rats, performing brain surgery on rats, and even learning how to do injections. My internships was one of the best experiences for me because I was able to expose myself to an area of my field that I had not yet learned about and found it very interesting as well.

What is the most fun activity you've done at Purdue?

Last spring break, I went on a mission trip to Joplin, Missouri, with a group of Purdue students. Throughout the week, we did tornado relief work, and met so many different people-- both survivors from Joplin and volunteers from around the country. Not only was it a lot of fun, but it was very humbling in that it made me more appreciative of the things I have. This trip was one of the best experiences of my life, and it wouldn't have been possible had I not been at Purdue.

The most fun activity I've ever done at Purdue is going to the Recreational Sports Center (CoRec). It is an amazing place to workout; lots of free weights, cardiac equipment and other fitness paraphernalia. The CoRec is also always full of people. I always end up running into someone I know. There are tons of events that happen there too: I've been in a beach volleyball tournament, corn-hole tournament, and attended an activity night where you could try all kinds of classes offered by Rec Sports.

What is your favorite class?

My favorite class has been my HK 368 Exercise Physiology class. The material in lecture relates anatomy and physiology with how it relates to exercise and therapy of the body. In another perspective, it presents the opposite relationship of how exercise relates to physiology of the body and its systems. The labs in the class are very hands on and are used to show how different exercises and experiments are done and measured to uncover results about how the body systems were affected. This class has been interesting, active, handson, and overall very entertaining and educational.

It was a great way to help me transition from high school to college where I met other students that soon became some of my closest friends.
