Information about HHS Promotion and Tenure Policies and Procedures
Decisions about faculty promotions and about the award of tenure to faculty members involve a series of reviews. The policies and procedures related to these reviews are described in several documents.
Each year the provost releases an updated version of the West Lafayette Campus Promotion and Tenure Policy (docx). This document presents the general criteria for faculty promotions and describes the procedures to be followed by primary committees (at the departmental or school level), by area committees (at the college level), and by the University Promotions Committee.
Crucial to the entire promotion process is the preparation of a formal promotion document for each candidate. The provost's office provides the President's Office Nomination for Promotion (Form 36), which is the template for the first page of the document. The content of the rest of the document is described in the Form 36 Instructions. In addition, the dean, as chair of the HHS Area Committee, has approved Some Guidelines for HHS Promotion Documents that derive from discussions at previous HHS Area Committee business meetings. These guidelines are intended either to clarify the Instructions for President’s Office Form 36 or to specify how certain types of information should be presented in HHS promotion documents. The resulting consistency in these documents helps Area Committee members to understand each candidate’s accomplishments.
Decisions about promotion and tenure are often made simultaneously, but tenure is sometimes awarded without promotion. A longstanding University policy, "Principles and Policies for Academic Freedom, Responsibilities and Tenure, and Procedures for Termination of Faculty Appointments for Cause" (also known as Executive Memorandum B-48) outlines the tenure policies of the University. In particular, it indicates the length of the probationary periods during which the tenure of faculty members eligible for tenure must be determined. Under certain conditions, however, faculty may request an extension of their probationary period. The provost's office website includes a link to a document for "Deviations from the Probationary Period (Stop-the-Tenure-Clock Policy)."
Some aspects of the promotion and tenure process are college-specific. Detailed information for our college is in the College of Health and Human Sciences Promotion and Tenure Policies and Procedures. This document outlines the procedures that are followed in the college when considering candidates for promotion and tenure. Faculty with questions about these procedures should contact their unit head or the college's Associate Dean for Administration.
Finally, each of the college's units has documented the standards for promotion for all categories of faculty (i.e., tenured/tenure-track, clinical/professional, and research faculty) with appointments in that unit. Each unit's documents can be reviewed by clicking on the appropriate line below, but none of the documents should be viewed as providing a checklist for promotion. Instead, each document should be read in the context of the criteria for promotion stated in the West Lafayette Campus Promotions Policy. When placed in that context, the documents provide additional guidance to the faculty in specific units.
