The Freshman Year

Getting Involved
Research has shown that students who are actively involved both in AND out of the classroom tend to be more successful and have a stronger connection to their college or university. With over 630 clubs and organizations at Purdue, there is something for everyone to get involved with. Whether it be a club or organization related to your major, a way to do volunteer work within the community, or a strictly social organization, there is something for you. Watch for "callouts" or informational meetings at the start of each semester. Listed below are links to help you find ways to become involved and make the most of your time at Purdue!

How Do I Join a Student Organization?
  • Attend an organization's callout to gather information about the group. You can find out about various callouts by checking The Purdue Exponent (the campus newspaper) or the Mortar Board calendar (for sale at local bookstores).
  • Go to the Activities Carnival, an event held in the fall featuring representatives from many student organizations.
  • Call or stop by an organization's office during office hours (usually between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.). Phone and room numbers are listed in the Mortar Board calendar.
  • Visit the Student Activities and Organizations page of the Office of the Dean of Students Web site, located in Room 250 of Schleman Hall, or call 49-41231. Staff members will be happy to help you get involved.

How Do I Form My Own Student Organization?

  • You will need a constitution (outlines are available in Schleman Hall, Room 250).
  • A list of officers, including a faculty adviser.
  • Once you've met these requirements, visit the Student Activities and Organizations Area of the Office of the Dean of Students (in Room 250 of Schleman Hall) for recognition as a new student organization. A financial account with the Business Office for Student Organizations then can be established.

How Does My Student Organization Plan an Event?

At least two weeks' notice is necessary for planning an event. Once your group has determined the desired date, time, and location of its activity, you should take the following steps:

  • Reserve the desired location. If your event is to take place in the Purdue Memorial Union or Stewart Center, reservations must be made in Room 8 of the Purdue Memorial Union. Most other campus locations can be reserved through Space Management and Academic Scheduling, located in Room 402, Engineering Administration Building, or by calling 49-43900.
  • Fill out an Event Planning Form (EPF). Pick up and return this form to Room 250, Schleman Hall. On the EPF you will list information about your event, estimated income and expenses, personnel in charge of the activity, and charity information.
  • If your event requires travel, fill out a Travel Planning Form (TPF) instead of an EPF. The TPF requires similar information, plus the signatures of the group's president, treasurer, and advisor. You will also need a list of people traveling and an emergency contact phone number.

How Do I Publicize an Event?

  • You can advertise on campus by posting fliers. (Be sure to comply with Purdue's posting policy. A copy of this policy is available in Room 250, Schleman Hall.)
  • Display a message on the electronic message board near Stewart Center. Pick up a form in Room 250, Schleman Hall.
  • Reserve a display case in Stewart Center. You can do this in Room 8, Purdue Memorial Union.
  • Place an announcement in residence hall table notices. Each residence hall has the form you will need to fill out.
