Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP)
What is AGEP?
AGEP is a network of universities dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities obtaining graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with special emphasis on those population groups underrepresented in these fields (e.g., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders).

AGEP at Purdue
Purdue University’s AGEP program has existed for over ten years, and our progression towards excellence continues. Our goal is to increase the number of domestic students receiving doctoral degrees and becoming faculty in sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with special emphasis on those population groups underrepresented in these fields.
Midwest Crossroads Alliance
Purdue AGEP began in 2004 with our first National Science Foundation (NSF) AGEP grant. Purdue University, Indiana University and Northwestern University partnered to develop the Midwest Crossroads AGEP, with Purdue University being the lead alliance institution. A strategic plan was developed among these schools to increase enrollment, improve retention and prepare and encourage students to enter the academy. Recruiting, retention and enrichment activities were key elements of the Crossroads plan.
Today, along with our current initiatives to mentor postdocs and increase minority faculty, we continue to operate beyond the funding period of our AGEP grant and our Crossroads activities have been institutionalized.
The CIC AGEP Alliance
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has recently granted a Transformation award to Purdue AGEP program along with the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) to support their Professional Advancement Initiative (PAI). Purdue is a lead member of the new CIC AGEP alliance with the goal of transitioning underrepresented minority (URM) postdocs and PhD graduates into faculty positions within the CIC Schools.
The CIC’s PAI is centered on two objectives:
• Creating a pool of URM post-doctoral fellows prepared and trained to enter the academy as tenure track faculty.
• Educating faculty and faculty search committees about unconscious bias and diversity hiring.
Midwest Crossroads Alliance: From Recruitment to the PhD
The key elements of the Midwest Crossroads Alliance plan is Recruiting, Retention and Enrichment
Recruiting: Linkages and partnerships with the Indiana LSAMP, Purdue University Science Bound Program, regional undergraduate institutions, and predominantly minority serving institutions nationwide are being developed and enhanced. AGEP faculty, AGEP students and staff disseminate information on graduate school opportunities at Purdue University at National Conferences and summer research programs such as SROP.
Retention: Student organizations are utilized to ensure that incoming graduate students have an instant peer network. We have a network of AGEP professors who are committed to graduating Ph.D. students. Summer transition experiences and numerous workshops/seminars to promote professorial development are being implemented.
Enrichment: College pedagogy courses, seminars, and Preparing Future Faculty programs are being reorganized, marketed, and promoted on each campus. AGEP will keep current to maintain awareness of best practices and innovation in faculty preparation and provide opportunities to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to enhance their skills and be marketable for faculty positions.
CIC AGEP: Professorial Advancement Initiative
The underrepresentation of African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans in STEM graduate programs is well known and remains an issue of national concern. Even more acute is the degree of underrepresentation of these racial and ethnic groups in STEM faculty positions in American institutions of higher learning, which impacts the ability of universities to attract and retain underrepresented minority students. The CIC AGEP PAI seeks to address this problem through a systematic, multi-institutional cultural change designed to increase the progression of URM postdocs into the professoriate.
The goals of the PAI is to develop a high-quality mentoring network that will improve the transition of postdoctoral scholars into the professoriate in the STEM disciplines and double the number of underrepresented minority faculty members hired at CIC institutions.
