Research in the Laboratory for Integrative Research in Nutrition, Fitness, and Aging at Purdue University is focused on dietary protein requirements and the role of dietary protein and exercise in healthy aging and energy balance. My primary projects are investigating the role of the brain's reward system in the regulation of appetite and food intake through human fMRI studies. The overall objective of these studies is to determine if appetite and feeding behavior can be altered through diet- and/or exercise-induced modulation of activity in these brain structures.
These projects are important and timely for the field of obesity treatment and prevention. Previous research has demonstrated that obese individuals have disruptions in brain reward processing when presented with external food cues – such as the sights and smells of foods – as well as during the consumption of highly palatable foods. However, very little data exist regarding strategies for “normalizing” neural reward processing in obesity. The results of our project will hopefully demonstrate whether or not behavioral or lifestyle interventions may be utilized to target brain reward processing in the context of obesity treatment and/or prevention.
As an avid outdoorsman, moving away from Colorado and all its natural beauty to Indiana was a difficult decision for my wife and me – at least initially. However, the professional opportunities available to me by attending Purdue University and working with one of the field’s most prominent scientists, Dr. Wayne Campbell, were simply too great to ignore. My experiences over the last few years here have been some of the most rewarding of my life, both professionally and personally. I’ve received rigorous in the design and coordination of clinical trials, grant writing, and greatly developed my written and oral communication skills. The quality of my training and the overall academic environment in the Interdepartmental Nutrition Program (INP) and the Ingestive Behavior Research Center (IBRC) has been on full display when I’ve attended national conferences such as Experimental Biology, where the influence of our program on the field of nutrition is obvious. Further, Dr. Campbell’s notoriety in the field has opened doors for me to collaborate with experts around country and helped me to secure a prestigious postdoctoral position after graduation. Of course, our time in West Lafayette hasn’t been all work and no play. My wife and I have developed numerous lifelong friendships and have taken full advantage of the different – though abundant – recreational opportunities in Indiana.
