Every international assistantship and international true fellowship is required to create and complete a GLACIER Tax Summary Report.  This program is a questionnaire that decides your tax residence and will decide if you qualify for any type of tax exemptions.  This report can be completed no more than 30 days prior to entering the United States, and must be completed, printed, and signed before you enter GPO.

Instructions for Completing GLACIER

  1. You should have received an e-mail from online-tax.net in your Purdue e-mail inbox on August 7th.  Click on the link in the e-mail (or type in online-tax.net in your browser) and log in using the temporary User ID and password.  If you did not receive an e-mail, please e-mail tax@purdue.edu with your full name and last 4 digits of your SSN (if you have a SSN) in order to receive a new e-mail.
  2. Create your new password.
  3. Check the box that states "Purdue University may provide my Form 1042-S (if any) electronically via the GLACIER Online Tax Compliance System" and click I Accept.
  4. Click "Update/View my Individual Record" and click Next.
  5. Select all that apply to your relationship with Purdue University, and click Next. This information is in your offer letter.
  6. Select the types of payments you will receive from Purdue University, and click Next. This information is in your offer letter.
  7. Type in your first name, last name, e-mail address, and Purdue ID.  
    • If you already have an SSN, type in your SSN and click Next.
    • If you do not already have an SSN, click "I do NOT have a U.S.-issued SSN or ITIN; I would like to apply for an SSN" and click Next. There will be a "For Your Information" screen that will pop up. Click Next.
      • True Fellowships are not required to have an SSN.
    • If you are an assistantship and only have an ITIN, click "I do NOT have a U.S.-issued SSN or ITIN; I would like to apply for an SSN" and click Next.  ITIN's cannot be used for Purdue University employment. There will be a "For Your Information" screen that will pop up. Click Next.
  8. Enter in your U.S. street address. Click Next.
  9. Enter in your permanent foreign mailing address. Click Next.
  10. Enter in your country of citizenship and tax residence. For most people, they are the same. Click Next.
  11. Check your sponsoring institution and select your current immigration status. Click Next.
  12. Enter in your date of entry into the U.S., the date your immigration status expires (on your I-20/DS-2019), as well as your estimated date of departure from the U.S. If you do not know what day you will be leaving the U.S., enter in the day your immigration status expires. Click Next.
  13. If your immigration status has not changed since you first entered the U.S., select "I have NOT changed my immigration status" and click Next.  If you have changed your immigration status since you entered the U.S., select "After entering the U.S. for this visit, I changed my immigration status." Click Next.  If your immigration status has changed, you will need to enter your original immigration status and the date that your status changed. Click Next.
  14. The screen is split up into two sections: "How long have you been present in the U.S.?" and "Have you ever been to the U.S. PRIOR to this visit?"  Once you have completed both sections, click Next. 
  15. "How long have you been present in the U.S.?" has the total number of days since you entered the U.S.  If you left for any amount of time since you first arrived, you will enter in the estimated number of days that you were not in the U.S. during that year.
  16. "Have you ever been to the U.S. PRIOR to this visit?" will include up to 8 previous trips into the U.S.  Enter in the year you visited, your immigration status on that visit, as well as an estimated amount of days you were in the U.S.  If you have not been in the U.S. previously, select "This is the FIRST time I have ever been to the U.S."
  17. Review the information you entered on the previous screen.  If all of the information is correct, click Next.
  18. Enter in your spouse and dependent information and click Next.
  19. If you qualify for a tax exemption, it will ask if you would like to accept it.  The tax exemptions vary by country, so not all countries will have a tax exemption with the U.S.  If you do not have an SSN entered, you will automatically be unable to qualify for a tax exemption.  Once you receive your SSN you will need to enter it into GLACIER, in case you qualify for a tax exemption. Click Next.
  20. If you accept the tax exemption, you will need to print off the treaty and bring it with you to GPO.
  21. Review all of the information entered, and click Next.
  22. Print off ALL forms.  All forms will need to be signed and dated, or cannot be accepted.  If you do not print off your forms before GPO you will be unable to enter.  Forms can be printed at home or in any computer lab on campus.
  23. Continue to click Next until you have finished the program. Click Exit.

Document Copies Needed

If you do not include copies of the paperwork below, your GLACIER packet will not be accepted and you will be unable to enter GPO.  Forms can be scanned and printed in STEW102, or at home.

  1. I-20 or DS-2019 Certificate of Eligibility U.S. immigration document
  2. I-94/I-94W Card; Electronic I-94 is printed from https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home
  3. U.S. Visa (usually located in Passport)

Social Security Number

If you did not have a Social Security Number when you initially filled out your GLACIER Tax Summary Report, you will need to resubmit another packet when you get your SSN. This means that you will have to go through the steps listed above again, print off the paperwork, attach the document copies, and either by U.S. or campus mail or fax the packet to the Nonresident Tax Administrator. DO NOT E-MAIL THE PACKET OR DELIVER THE PACKET IN PERSON.
