Program Description

In general, two types of external fellowships are eligible; external multi-year fellowships or external dissertation fellowships. We hope that the proposals will be funded, but awarding of the Incentive Grant does not depend on the success of the proposal. Each of the targeted external fellowship programs provides premier multi-year funding for graduate study or dissertation year support. The program provides one award of $250 for one fellowship proposal to a select list of eligible multi-year fellowship programs and awards $100 to a select list of eligible dissertation fellowships. Please note there is only one award per student, per academic year.

To qualify and submit a Graduate School Fellowship Incentive Grant:

Students must be currently enrolled in a relevant program when applying for these external fellowships and must plan to continue graduate study at Purdue University in the subsequent year(s).
Students must submit a copy of the following by uploading it to Blackboard LEARN as one pdf file. View the Submission Guidelines on the Graduate School website for all the details on how to load your application.

  1. Curriculum vitae with your PUID;
  2. A completed copy of the fellowship application, including supporting documents, if any; (references are not required)
  3. Confirmation from the sponsoring agency that the application was received

Eligibility Requirements and Deadlines

The exact requirements and deadlines for the external competitions vary, and these details are available from the individual fellowship program offices. There are two types of fellowships for graduate students to consider: (1) external, multi-year fellowships and (2) external dissertation fellowships. Research Grants, Short Term Fellowships, Post Doctoral Fellowships and Renewals of existing fellowships are not eligible. The fellowship must provide stipend support and meet the Graduate School minimum stipend amount for the current year and be nationally competitive.
To identify possible funding opportunities, search the Graduate School Funding Database. Eligible fellowships may include, but are not limited to, those provided by the following organizations:
Additional fellowships may qualify. Contact the Graduate School Fellowship Office.

Criteria for evaluation include the applicant's academic record and the merit of the proposal, in relation to the fellowship program guidelines; and adherence to the Incentive Grant guidelines.
