Young Alum Makes Commitment to Study Abroad
We are so proud of Purdue alumnus Dustin Brown (2010 Cert from School of Management, 2011 BS from College of Health and Human Sciences) for his generosity and kindness. Dustin and his wife Jasmine are providing a scholarship each year for five years for a deserving Purdue student to study abroad. Despite their young age, Dustin and Jasmine made this commitment because of Dustin’s appreciation for the opportunity that he had to study and intern in Australia. Thus, we have the Dustin and Jasmine Brown Study Abroad Scholarship that was awarded this spring to a deserving student, Anthony R., who is on a summer internship program in Sydney—following in Dustin’s footsteps!
In 2010, Dustin took a summer to study abroad in Sydney, Australia in connection with Purdue and the CAPA International Education organization. Being from the small Indiana town of Greensburg, this was quite a step for Dustin to go half way around the world to live and work around people who were different from those with whom he grew up. But his sense of adventure overcame any reluctance, and he found himself on a plane heading for “down under”. The initial culture shock quickly wore off, and he began developing lasting friendships and a feeling of “home” as he furthered his knowledge and skills. As he immersed himself into the Australian culture, he quickly developed a love for this new country.
Dustin’s study abroad internship was more than successful. As he was completing the program, his Australian internship boss offered him a permanent position with the company and asked him to move to Sydney. In July, 2011 after he had returned home and completed his degree at Purdue, Dustin was on his way back to Sydney to continue his work with his former intern supervisor who is now his boss.
