The Purdue University Galleries are a series of individual exhibition spaces managed as a unit by a staff of three full-time employees, student workers and interns. The Galleries are funded through the University's College of Liberal Arts and through grants and contributions. All exhibitions and programs are free and open to the public.
The Stewart Center Gallery presents four exhibitions during an academic year and one exhibition during the summer session. In January 2009, the Robert L. Ringel Gallery in the Purdue Memorial Union will become a dedicated permanent collection display venue.
Exhibitions are carefully chosen to offer consistently high quality while providing a variety of perspectives on art and society, in support of the educational mission of the University. Due to the diverse scope of study and research taking place at the University, the Galleries has chosen to concentrate on exhibitions of regional, national and international appeal, featuring artists with a proven commitment to artistic exploration through contemporary aesthetics. A committee of full time Art & Design faculty, local artists and arts educators is consulted for recommendations on proposals for Galleries programming.
All media will be considered for exhibition, including new and emerging technologies. Proposals received by October 1 will be presented to the exhibition review committee, which meets each year in early November. Proposals should be professionally presented for review and should include the following:
- A cover letter describing the proposed exhibition, any special installation requirements, and available dates.
- A resume/vita and professional exhibition record
- At least ten and no more than twenty digital images representative of work and an accompanying text listing of the images, including title, media, dimensions, and date of completion.
- A self-addressed, stamped envelope (at least 9 x 12”) for return of information, if desired.
The Purdue Galleries insures all works while on exhibit and covers printing and distribution costs of an announcement mailer for each exhibit period. A shipping and transportation honorarium is provided whenever possible to individual artists.
