Major: Apparel design and technology
Hometown: Lake Zurich, Ill.
Future plans: Open a boutique featuring her designs.
Creative visions: Holappa draws inspiration from the world around her. From colors to advertisements, anything can trigger a design. "I've always been the type of person that I just like what I like," Holappa says.
It's in her genes: "My grandma and aunt both sew. We pick out fabrics together. My grandma has done it for so long, though. Whenever I show her one of my designs, there's always something she knows I could have done better."
Color is the new black: Holappa will display eight pieces in the Purdue Fashion Association's spring show. She has had her senior collection planned since her freshman year. "I always knew it was going to be inspired by the 1970s. I love how colorful and bright it is. Black is so overdone."
Take note, Tim Gunn: "I want to try out for Project Runway. I hope it sticks around for two more seasons. I think I could handle it. I'd like to be on one of those shows!"
