Family and Medical Leave
(FMLA)
Family and medical leave is available for employees who have been employed by the University for at least 12 months (consecutive and nonconsecutive) and have worked at least 1,250 hours (excluding any paid leave such as vacation or University-designated holidays) during the 12-month period preceding the date FMLA leave commences.
This leave is coordinated with existing available leaves and permits employees up to a maximum of 12 workweeks of leave without pay in a rolling 12-month period for the birth/adoption/placement of a child; their own serious illness; or the illness of their spouse, parent, or child.
While the FMLA definition of “spouse” does not include same-sex domestic partners, same-sex domestic partners will be deemed “spouses” for purposes of this policy pursuant to the Board of Trustees’ September 2002 resolution, which granted benefits to same-sex domestic partners.
