New residents have 60 days upon entering the state to
obtain an Indiana license and vehicle registration.
New requirements on driver’s licenses are now
in effect. Along with the out-of-state license, you
will need proof of birth, proof of your Indiana address,
and social security number. A current ID list can be
obtained through the license branch. You must have
all of your identification before taking the written
and vision tests. If your out-of-state license has
expired for one year or more, a driving test will also
be required. Motorcycle endorsements also require testing.
Indiana residents 21 years of age or older require no
written test unless you have six points or more on your
license.
First-time motorcycle endorsements require a valid Indiana
license and must pass the written exam. You must hold
the permit for 30 days and complete a skills test. At
that time, with your license, skills test, and valid
permit, the endorsement may be added to your Indiana
license.
For chauffeur, public passenger chauffeur, or CDL license,
please contact your local branch for details.
Learner permits are available at 16 years of age after
passing a written test and vision screening. If age
15, you must be enrolled in an approved driver’s
education course to obtain a permit.
For out-of-state vehicles, a title and police check
are required. Vehicles with lienholders (cars financed)
need to furnish the out-of-state registration, lienholder
information, and insurance company and policy number
so the license branch can request your out-of-state
title.

in Lafayette at (765) 448-3738 or the West Lafayette
