A Message from the President - August 2011
August always brings new energy and excitement to our Purdue campuses as we begin to welcome students for the fall semester.
Our returning students soon will get back into the daily routine of campus life, and our class of first-year students will adjust to the challenges that go along with entering this new phase in their lives.
To help ease their transition, Purdue offers a multitude of orientation resources for new students. The largest of these, Boiler Gold Rush, will run Aug. 13-19, offering activities such as campus tours, social and athletic events, an academic picnic, and an introduction to Purdue traditions. Before long, these new arrivals will know all the words to "Hail Purdue," and recognize the Boilermaker Special when it rides through campus!
Ensuring a smooth transition to college life is important to Purdue's student success and retention levels. We enter this new academic year with the highest retention rates in Purdue's history.
This month's "5 Students Who ... " web feature highlights some of our talented class of incoming students. Even as young adults, these students, like Shelby Dartis, a freshman pharmacy student from Indianapolis, have their academic careers on the right track, and already have distinguished themselves as researchers, intellectuals and leaders. It is at Purdue that their transformation from promising young explorers to experts in their fields -- poised to make a positive difference in the world -- will take place, and that is at the heart of everything we do.
New faces arriving on campus inspire me to look ahead to a great year -- in the classroom, in the community and around the world.
To our returning students and faculty, welcome back to campus. To our new students, welcome to Purdue. We are so glad you are here! And to all of our Boilermaker family, Hail Purdue!
