Exploring Majors & Careers

You’ll be making a lot of choices over a lifetime.  80% of college students in the United States will change their major at least once.  The average person in the United States will change jobs at least 10 times over their lifetime.  80% of the jobs you will have in the future don’t even exist yet.  Purdue offers over 200 degree options - and that's not even counting all of the specializations, concentrations, minors, and certificates you can earn!  The world offers more career choices than anyone can count—and new ones are developed every day!

How can you explore your options and find the major and career for you?  The best way to make such a complex decision is to break it into smaller pieces.  Give yourself space to gather and think about information.  Take time to experience working environments and the types of people there.  Here’s the process we recommend:

The first step in finding the right major and career is discovering what makes you uniquely YOU!

During EDPS 10500, we'll teach you about plans of study, Purdue’s majors, and career opportunities, but there is a lot of exploration you can do on your own, too.

One necessary step to finding the right major and career fit is to talk to people in interesting careers.

Most people will test drive a car before buying—why should a major or a career be any different?
