Bowen Engineering Head and Professor School of Civil Engineering (002560-2011)

Purdue University invites applications and nominations for the Bowen Engineering Head of the School of Civil Engineering.

The School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette, is consistently ranked among the select top schools of civil engineering in the nations.  The School currently has 58 faculty members, 42 staff members, an undergraduate enrollment of nearly 550, a graduate enrollment of over 375, and annual research expenditures in excess of $26 million.  The School offers leading research and education programs in various sub-disciplines of study, including architectural, geomantic, construction, geotechnical, hydraulics and hydrology, structural, environmental, materials, and transportation engineering. In addition to a 92, 000 square-foot (assignable) Civil Engineering building, the School’s include the world class Bowen laboratory dedicated to discovery and dissemination of knowledge to achieve high performance and resilient infrastructure systems. The School is also home of NSF’s $ 105 million Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) operations center.  The Joint Transportation Research Program (JTRP) is a long-term unique successful partnership between the Indiana Department of Transportation and the School.  The School’s faculty members also have strong connections with various interdisciplinary research centers of Purdue’s Discovery Park.  A dynamic leader is sought to continue to advance the School’s programs and to enhance their national and international impact through a commitment to excellence.

Responsibilities:  The Head will provide vision and leadership to the faculty, students, staff, alumni and other stakeholders of the School, and will have the opportunity to shape and implement the strategic plan for the School and the College of Engineering.  The Head must have a PhD in Civil Engineering or related disciplines, quality for appointment at the Full Professor level with tenure, have a distinguished academic, industrial, or research record, have demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills as well as a commitment to diversity, and possess the qualities necessary to enhance the School’s programs through a continuing commitment to excellence in discovery, learning and engagement.  The candidates should also have a clear vision of the current needs and future directions of the civil engineering profession, and be skilled in administration, student and alumni relations, advancement, and the mentoring of students, faculty and staff.
