Clinical/Engagement Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) Specialty Crop Production (002992-2013)

Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, Southwest Purdue Agricultural Center, Vincennes, Indiana

 RESPONSIBILITIES:  Conduct an innovative outreach and applied research program with demonstrated impact on commercial vegetable and melon crop production.  Develop educational programs and publications appropriate to the needs of the industry and Extension professionals in Indiana and nationally. The stakeholder-driven applied research program should complement outreach efforts in vegetable and melon crop production. Primary research area is flexible and could involve cropping systems ecology, soil fertility / plant nutrition, irrigation management, postharvest, or protected agriculture, with an emphasis on sustainable production.  Teach an introductory horticulture course at Vincennes University.

Appointee is expected to interact with faculty in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture (HLA), other Purdue faculty, field Extension staff, and growers.  Generation of funding to support research and outreach is expected, and publication of research results in appropriate venues is expected.  Involvement and interaction with graduate students is encouraged, including recruiting and advising students.  Further information about the position may be obtained from the co-chairs of the search committee: Dr. Liz Maynard (Email: emaynard@purdue.edu) or Dr. Steve Weller (Email: weller@purdue.edu).

QUALIFICATIONS:  Ph.D. in horticulture, soil science, crop ecology or a closely related field. Applicants should have knowledge of areas related to specialty crop production, efficient use of crop production inputs, design of field and greenhouse experiments, and problem analysis. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential. Ability to work effectively with clientele and county extension staff is essential and ability to work as a member of diverse teams is important. Organizational skills are expected. 

APPOINTMENT AND SALARY:  The individual will be administratively responsible to the Head of the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, Purdue University, West Lafayette. The appointee will be a member of the Department’s Specialty Crops Team as well as multi-disciplinary Extension/research teams on campus and at Regional Centers that serve the needs of the commercial vegetable industry in Indiana.  Clinical/Professional Faculty in the College of Agriculture hold non-tenure track faculty appointments and are eligible for promotion in rank as defined within Purdue University promotions policy.

Compensation:  Salary will be competitive and commensurate with professional experience. This is an academic year appointment with recurring support for summer salary.  An excellent package of fringe benefits includes employer contributions to the individual’s retirement program, medical, life & disability insurance.
