Director, Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories (002397-2010)
Requirements: The School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics are launching an internal search to identify an individual with exceptional leadership skills and vision for the position of Director or the Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories. Zucrow Labs, founded in 1948 as the Rocket Propulsion Laboratory, is an interdisciplinary research an education center located on a 24 acre site adjacent to the Purdue University Airport. With a distinguished history of aeropropulsion, thermal fluids, and related fields of research, and an extensive portfolio of current research in disciplines such as unsteady aerodynamics of turbomachinery, aeroacoustics, gas turbine and internal engine combustion, solid, hybrid, and liquid rocket propellants, multiphase, microscale and nanoscale combustion for energetic materials, high pressure and hydrogen storage systems, computational fluid mechanics, alternative fuels, fire research and environmental impact of combustion, and atomization processes, the laboratories are positioned to be recognized as a national resource for investigation in areas of sustainability and security, defense and space sciences.
Qualifications: The Director should hold a tenured/tenure-track appointment as a full professor in the College of Engineering and be an active researcher in the areas of thermal sciences, propulsion, and/or related fields. The ideal candidate will be able to articulate a clear vision for strategically expanding the scale of collaborative research at Zucrow Labs, increasing the national profile of the Labs, and leveraging existing resources for greater investment from stakeholders, particularly in future infrastructure needs. S/he must also be enthusiastic about mentoring junior faculty and enhancing the collaborative environment of the Labs, including the effective utilization of shared resources. The Director will be expected to conduct a significant portion of his/her future research at Zucrow labs, and will be given at least a 0.25 FTE appointment in the School of Mechanical Engineering and in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
