Grabbing a Safe Bite of Food

man with watermelon propSalmonella. Even the word itself is enough to make most people cringe and wonder about the safety of their food.

An outbreak of salmonella, traced to cantaloupes from a southern Indiana farm, led Purdue Extension to host a daylong workshop in Vincennes, Ind. The goal — to provide information crucial to helping prevent foodborne illnesses. Among the attendees — Mike Horrall, a farmer from Oaktown, Ind.

"The big message I got from it was that methods for food safety are changing and we all have to change in growing, processing and storing our produce," Horrall says. "Purdue Extension provides the resources in getting that done."

During the workshop, food safety experts gave education presentations about salmonella and practices that producers should follow to ensure high standards for food safety on their farms.

"I feel a lot better for the future of the cantaloupe industry in Indiana after that meeting," Horrall says.
