A Powerful Team for Indiana

grade school student teaching classWhat do you get when you combine Purdue University and one of Indiana's largest employers? A powerful team to show students why careers in STEM fields are anything but dry and boring.

Purdue works with Eli Lilly and Company through the Lilly Partnership with Indianapolis Public Schools to promote STEM education. More than 100 Lilly scientists and engineers are active in classrooms a few hours each month.

"They work with students to both explain science in the real world and model practicing STEM professionals," says Paul Ainslie, managing director of the I-STEM Resource Network at Purdue.

Ainslie says one of the best parts about the program is that many of the professionals from Lilly are graduates from Indiana's colleges and universities. Now, they can show students how a STEM education took them to one of Indiana’s premiere technology firms, and how the students can follow similar paths.

"Partnerships such as this one with Lilly really provide the foundation for all other engagement, because they open doors for connections," Ainslie says. "Such public-private partnerships are the perfect model for moving Purdue and Indiana ahead."
