Because
of America's growing dependence on imported petroleum, we believe
the nation is rapidly approaching a crisis that could threaten
the economy, our national security, and the very future of
our country. Much of the world's oil supplies are in the hands
of nations that either are not supportive of America's interests
or are politically unstable. We believe it is time to explore
alternatives to our high level of dependence on imported oil.
That is why we convened the Richard G. Lugar-Purdue
Summit on Energy Security on Purdue's campus in West Lafayette, Indiana, to focus on
prospects for other sources of liquid fuels. National leaders
from government, business, academia, and various energy-related
fields participated in the invitation-only event, which
covered national security and economic policies, biomass
and coal-based fuels, and suggested business and government strategies.
We believe the summit will have a significant impact on future
discussion as the United States frames its energy policy and
will set the stage for a safer, more prosperous future for
America. |
