  9. When will I receive my 1098T?
    a. 1098Ts will be available by January 31.

  10. What am I supposed to do with this 1098T statement?
    a. This information is being provided in order to help individuals determine and support their eligibility for higher education tax credits. You should consult with your tax advisor for specific information regarding your eligibility, as income requirements apply.

  11. I haven’t received my 1098T
    a. There are NO 1098T for a student if a student is: i. Nonresident alien ii. Noncredit course iii. Qualified expenses are paid entirely with SCHOLARSHIP funding. As a general rule, individuals are not eligible to receive a higher education tax credit if their gift aid exceeds their educational fees. iv. Qualified expenses are paid entirely by third party AND institution does not maintain a separate financial acct for the student b. Incorrect or missing local address in Banner -1098T returned to us i. Insufficient address, no forwarding address

  12. Why isn’t there an amount present in Box 1 on my 1098T?
    a. Institutions are given the option of providing amounts that reflect either the amount of eligible payments received by the school or the amount of charges billed to the student. Purdue has elected to report the charges billed to the student. This is the amount billed at any point during the 2010 calendar year, regardless of when the student paid his or her bill.

  13. Why is my social security number incorrect?
    a. If a student has not provided us with a social security number, the student’s PUID# is substituted. The students can submit their social security numbers on a W-9 form found at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9s.pdf. This must be submitted before 1098T’s are generated for 2011. We cannot provide a corrected 1098T form after.

  14. I want two 1098Ts, one for my dad and one for my grandma who both paid towards my tuition.
    a. If a person is asking for TWO 1098Ts, copies can be printed for family, but ONLY ONE PERSON, the person claiming the student as a dependant, CAN CLAIM THE TAX CREDIT.

  15. Why doesn’t the form show the payments I made?
    a. Purdue 1098Ts report on tuition billed rather than tuition paid. Please refer to your MyPurdue and review your “payment history” on paid amounts in 2011 to get the amount you have paid for the current year.

  16. I am the parent and I paid the bills, so I want the 1098T to be mailed to me.
    a. 1098T will be mailed (paper or electronically) directly to the student. Due to FERPA regulations and privacy information contained within the 1098T document, we are required to send them directly to the student.

  17. I paid a lot more than you have on this form:
    a. Room and board are NOT included on the 1098T and cannot be claimed as eligible tuition expense per IRS code.

  18. What about 529 funds?
    a. 529 money is NOT included on the 1098T because they have already been taxed

  19. Why isn’t the previous Spring appearing on my 1098T statement?
    a. The Spring of the previous year was already reported on last year’s statement. This is because we report based upon when fees are billed, rather than when you may have made payment for these fees. Generally, fees for the Spring are billed during November and early December, and therefore are a part of the last tax year.

  20. I graduated in May but did not get a 1098T, why?
    a. Purdue reports on the amounts billed on the 1098T, not the amounts paid. The amount of tuition for the current Spring semester, therefore, will show on the previous year’s 1098T.

  21. What is being reported in Box 2 on the 1098T?
    a. Box 2 reflects charges within the calendar year for tuition only.

  22. What is being reported in Box 4 on the 1098T?
    a. Box 4 would contain adjustments in charges billed and adjustments to scholarships and grants during the calendar year.

  23. What is being reported in Box 5?
    a. Scholarships or grants administered by Purdue during the calendar year b. Grad staff remission c. VA benefits
