Student Organizations
Purdue has a wide range of professional and recreational organizations for students to choose from. List below are organizations that are specifically related to EAS. Click here for a complete list of activities and organizations available at Purdue.
Purdue University Meteorological Association (PUMA)
The Purdue University Meteorological Association (PUMA), which provides a recreational and educational environment for students interested in meteorology, has a membership of approximately 25 students. Their activities include presentations by invited speakers (alumni, faculty, departmental visitors) visits to TV and radio stations and watching weather videos. They sell eye-catching t-shirts and sweatshirts to raise money for activities.
Association of Engineering and Environmental Geologists (AEG)
The Purdue Student Chapter of the Association of Engineering and Environmental Geologists (AEG) has 15-20 members. They have a speakers program (faculty, professionals in the area, and alumni), and the group also makes trips to regional meetings of the AEG where they are introduced to future employers.
Purdue Geoscience Society
The Purdue Geoscience Society (PGS) organizes talks and field trips. They conduct an aluminum can recycling operation to raise money for their activities.
Sigma Gamma Epsilon
The Earth science honorary society, Sigma Gamma Epsilon (SGE), which is an associated society of the Geological Society of America has a chapter in the Department. The society was established to recognize scholarship and professionalism in the Earth Sciences. It has for its objectives the scholastic, scientific, and professional advancement of its members and the extension of relations of friendship and assistance among colleges and universities that are devoted to the advancement of the Earth Sciences. SGE has numerous activities to promote the earth sciences. It conducts a Department-wide conference, the EAS Department Research Exposition, that provides an opportunity for faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates to present their research at the end of the academic year. In addition, it has a lecture series, conducts field trips, and organizes social and moneymaking activities. The 1999-2000 officers are: President - Dan Getman, Treasurer - Hope Klagges. Prof. Zinsmeister is the faculty advisor. Any person in any branch of the Earth Sciences who has completed at least 12 semester hours in earth science courses and has maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA in these courses is qualified to apply for membership in SGE.
Purdue Paleoontological Society
The Purdue Paleontological Society exists to educate its members and others in the community about the science of paleontology in a manner both scientific and engaging. Venues include fossil collection excursions, museum tours, and science education programs.
