Eric Riggs assumes national leadership roles in geoscience education

Eric Riggs was named president of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers for the 2007-2008 term. The NAGT is an international organization of nearly 2,000 geoscience teachers and geoscience education researchers with members in all 50 states and overseas, and publishes the Journal of Geoscience Education. Riggs is the co-director of Purdue’s Center for Research and Engagement in Science and Mathematics Education (CRESME), associate professor in the departments of earth and atmospheric sciences and curriculum & instruction, and director of the Indigenous Earth Sciences Project. Riggs was also recently selected as a guest co-editor for a special edition of the Journal of Geoscience Education titled “Broadening Participation in the Earth Sciences.” The special edition contains 21 articles (including two co-authored by Riggs) dealing with current research and programs on expanding diversity in the earth and space sciences.
