Dr. Dale Sawyer

Dale S. Sawyer graduated from Purdue University with a BS in Geophysics in 1976. During his first summer at Purdue, Dale (with fellow student Neil Stillman) participated in a summer research project with Dr. William Hinze, conducting a high resolution archeological magnetic survey at Ft. Ouiatenon and a gravity survey over a natural gas storage field. Dale also spent a summer as an intern at Amoco Production Co. in Houston. After graduation from Purdue and another 6 months at Amoco, Dale began Graduate school at MIT in Cambridge Massachusetts. There, he worked with Drs. Nafi Toksoz and John Sclater on the thermal and mechanical evolution of rifted continental margin off the east coast of North America. After receiving a PhD in Marine Geophysics in 1982, Sawyer moved to Austin, Texas, as a Research Associate/Scientist at the Institute for Geophysics at the University of Texas. There his work expanded into marine seismology and geodynamics. In 1988 he moved to Rice University in Houston as an Associate Professor. He was tenured in 1994 and promoted to Professor in 1997.
