Dr. Joe Francisco Named Distinguished Professor

EAS now has its second distinguished professor. We are extremely proud to announce that on June 2nd Dr. Joe Francisco was named the William E. Moore Distinguished Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Chemistry. Joe’s astounding research productivity in atmospheric chemistry and his mentorship of junior scientists has contributed to his international reputation as one of the very best atmospheric chemists in the world. The naming of his distinguished professorship pays tribute to Dr. William Moore, the first African American PhD in Chemistry at Purdue. The Purdue University Board of Trustees approved the creation of two new Science professorships at its meeting on June 2: Joseph S. Francisco as the William E. Moore Distinguished Professor of Earth and Atmospheric Science and Chemistry; Philip L. Fuchs as the Richard B. Wetherill Professor of Chemistry.

Francisco has been a professor at Purdue since 1995. He holds a joint appointment in chemistry and earth and atmospheric sciences. Prior to coming to Purdue, he was on the faculty at Wayne State University from 1986 to 1994. <Full Article>

Kudos to Southern University Professor William E. Moore, who earlier this month had a Purdue University professorship named after him for being the first African American to receive a doctorate from Purdue’s College of Science.
