Spring Fest 2006

Despite the fact that the mercury dropped into the low thirties, approximately twenty-five thousand people arrived on campus the weekend of April 8th. They all arrived in anticipation of seeing what wonders Purdue University’s Spring Fest had to offer in free family entertainment. The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences comprised around half of the College of Science’s tent on Memorial Mall. Families wondering through, delighted in sitting in an Earthquake simulation chair, experiencing movements that mimicked the motion one would feel if they were to be in an earthquake themselves. Two paleontology dig sites were set up, one for older and the other younger children. In these sites children carefully excavated symbols of past life in the form of small plastic dinosaurs. As suitable with springtime in Indiana, several weather topics delighted and educated the masses. Kids of all ages marveled at the can crush demonstrating the power of the air pressure always around us. People had the opportunity to get their picture taken with a backdrop of a tornado from Indiana. Tornado tubes, a tornado simulator, and an operational weather station were also crowd pleasers within the tent. A special thanks to all who helped make this event such a great success!!
