Further Explanation
Earth and Atmospheric Science Requirements
Some of our required courses are so new they do not yet have official numbers (e.g. 1xx).
1EAS Electives include all EAS courses.
2EAS Professional Electives are EAS courses at 300 level or above
3Science or Engr. Electives include any courses in the Colleges of Science or Engineering at
the 200 level or higher. You might take MA 261 for instance.
College of Science Requirements
Many College of Science requirements can be satisfied in multiple ways, some of which don’t
require taking courses.
To summarize the College of Science requirements :
4Second Science Lab sequence. An introductory two-course sequence in Biology or Physics
appropriate to your specialization.
5Statistics, STAT 301, 350, 503, 511, or EAS xxx (Stat Methods)
6Computer Programming, CS 158 or CS 177
7Language & Culture. A combination of Foreign language courses and certain other
courses, or an approved semester abroad program (even in an English speaking country).
8Multidisciplinary Science. This could be satisfied by taking a multidisciplinary course, but
there are other options as well.
9Great Issues in Science. Courses that address the impact of science on society.
10General Education Electives. Courses in the Humanities, Social Sciences or Business.
Current students, in particular, may wish to consult the details of the College of Science requirements that are briefly described in the curriculum plan.
College of Science Requirements
If you are still reading this, you may want to consider a Law degree at some point. There are a few other requirements that help our students to stay on track.
Requirements for Entry into the Upper Division in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
Entry into the upper division means registration for the semester which includes EAS 3xx courses. A student pursuing a major in Earth and Atmospheric Science must satisfy the following before being permitted to enter the upper division:
(1) Completion of MA 161, MA 162 (or equivalent), CHM 115, CHM 116 and the first course in the second lab sequence (example: PHYS 172, 220 or equivalents) each with a grade of C or better; and
(2) Completion of required lower division courses in the student's major area each with a grade of C or better.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate in any EAS major, a student must have an average grade point index of 2.00 or above in EAS courses required for the major.
The University requires that at least 32 credits hours must be at the 300 level or above.
