EAS Graduate Admissions Information

To Apply -

The following information must be submitted for an applicant to be considered for admission:

a) completed Graduate School electronic application form,
b) application fee.
c) statement of research interest and personal goals,
d) three letters of recommendation
e) official, certified transcripts of all previous academic work, and
f) Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores from the general test ( the GRE subject test is not required )
g) TOEFL (for international applicants only; original required)

NOTICE: For students in China (including Hong Kong), Korea and Taiwan who have taken the computer-based GRE prior to October 1, 2002, you may submit those scores with your application to the Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, but you are also required to take the paper-based test in either November or March and to submit those scores as well.

Additional information on the statement of research interest and personal goals

The statement of purpose should be a one- or two-page statement describing your professional objectives and his/her academic and research interests. If possible, the statement should indicate how you see your own research interests overlapping with programs or projects in EAS. If you have previous research experience we would like you to write about your experience, and what you accomplished. We are also interested in hearing about any area of your life where you have excelled.

Additional language requirement for non-English-speaking internationals

Completion of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and submission of results is required for all non-English-speaking foreign nationals. A minimum score of 550 is required. For the computer-based test, a minimum score of 213 is required.

For students who take the TOEFL iBT, required minimum test scores of the four tests areas are:

Writing 18
Speaking 18
Listening 14
Reading 19

An overall minimum score of 77 is required for admission by the Graduate School.

The Graduate School also accepts International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores. An overall band score of 6.5 is required for admission.

Application for direct admission to the Ph.D. program

Individuals who have not completed a Master's Program acceptable to the EAS Graduate Committee will normally be considered for initial admission to the Master's Program. However, individuals may apply for direct admission to the Doctoral Program. The M.S. degree is not a prerequisite for the Ph.D. degree.

Application Deadlines

Applications may be submitted at any time. However, for domestic applicants, all materials should be sent so as to be received not less than three (3) months prior to the desired starting date. International applicants should send their material to be received not less than six (6) months prior to the desired starting date. Fall semester applicants desiring consideration for financial aid, a Fellowship, a Research Assistantship (RA) or Teaching Assistantship (TA), are advised to submit all application materials before January 15. Spring semester applicants are advised to submit all application materials before September 1.
