Rural Indiana Strategy for Excellence

A 2020 Vision for the Indiana Countryside

March 15, 2006

The Purdue Center for Regional Development was asked by Lt. Governor Becky Skillman to facilitate a citizen-based process to gather input and provide guidance in the creation of a more vibrant and prosperous rural Indiana. Today, we are pleased to submit a draft report titled “The Spirit and Quality of Place: A 2020 Vision for the Indiana Countryside.”

This report represents the best thinking of a group of 150 dedicated volunteers from numerous institutions, organizations, governments and constituencies across the state. We thank these individuals for the generous donation of their time, talents and creativity.

The Lt. Governor will use this information to help create and support a vision and strategic framework for building the future of rural Indiana. Obviously, this involves an important role for state government. However, RISE 2020 is about much more than state government. It also is designed to identify and serve the needs of rural Hoosiers by enlisting the support of other public, private, academic and philanthropic initiatives to create strong, sustainable communities that provide a high quality of life for those who call rural Indiana home.
