International Breast Cancer and Nutrition

The mission of the international breast cancer and nutrition (IBCN) project is to develop an international collaborative program to identify the impact of nutrition on breast cancer development and recurrence and to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms, including genomics (genetic and epigenetic influence), involved in nutrients-induced breast tissue alterations and cancer development. The anticipated outcomes of this program are the development of strategies to diminish breast cancer incidence and/or incidence of aggressive forms of breast cancer based on epidemiological and biological findings related to nutrition and an impact on public policies via information of the public and health authorities.

This project will be launched during the first international symposium on “Breast Cancer Prevention: Nutrition, Communication, and Public Policy” to be held at Purdue University on October 18 and 19, 2010. Registration will begin in January.

Project Leadership:
Sophie Lelièvre, DVM, LLM (Public Health), PhD (Associate Professor; leader of the Breast Cancer Discovery Group of the Purdue Center for Cancer Research; involved in public health, epigenetics, translational studies in breast cancer research)

Dorothy Teegarden, PhD (Professor; group leader of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program of the Oncological Sciences Center, Cancer Prevention Internship Program Director; involved in nutrition and breast cancer, clinical studies related to nutrition)

Connie Weaver, PhD (Professor and Head, Dept. of Foods and Nutrition; Director, Botanicals Center for age-related diseases; Deputy Director, Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute-CTSI)

Rebecca Doerge, PhD (Professor, Statistics; Director, Statistical Bioinformatic Center; involved in genomics/epigenomics–based large scale analyses)

Jakob Jensen, PhD (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Communication, involved in Health Communication)

George Moore, DVM, PhD (Associate Professor; Director, Clinical Trials; involved in cancer epidemiology)
