Interns for Indiana Program

The Interns for Indiana program (IfI) at Purdue University, funded through the Lilly Endowment, seeks innovative ways to keep Indiana's college graduates in Indiana. By placing high quality student interns with start-up companies, Purdue hopes to accelerate company growth, while providing students with valuable educational experiences

  • 357 students matched with internships at 121 Indiana companies
  • Over 146,500 hours of labor contributed to Indiana startups
  • Students from a broad range of majors
  • Students participate in a seminar series designed to enhance their internship experience
  • 25 students have been hired full-time by their internship company after graduating
  • 33 students have been able to continue working part-time at their internship company outside of the IfI program
  • 70% of graduated IfI students stay in Indiana
  • 9 former IfI students started their own Indiana company
IfI…
  • increases student interest in working for a start-up company
  • heightens student interest in starting their own company
  • gives students greater confidence in their ability to succeed in the workforce
  • broadens students' career choices
What IfI students are saying:

“After IfI I am more open to working with smaller companies because I know I will be given more challenging tasks.”
I’ve learned more about the companies that exist in Indiana, what they do, and how they are run.
“I have discovered different employment options than I would have considered with my degree.”
Challenge was the name of the game this summer, but I actually enjoyed that. Those are the parts that facilitate the most growth and learning.
“This internship has opened my eyes to the opportunities Indiana has because of connections I have made while working here.”
I also enjoyed listening to the experiences, business strategies and how other startups compete in crowded markets.

What IfI companies are saying:

“As a small business owner, the program has made a HUGE impact on my business during the last year that I have participated.”
You have done an outstanding job of understanding our small business’s need for daring and enterprising employees. The goals of the IFI program are aligned with small business’s desires to create challenging jobs in Indiana.
“Our interns have helped us to hire and train a sales staff, develop and launch new versions of our software, as well as build our customer service resources. They have also allowed us to bring more of our projects to market and take on a larger project load.”
We have been extremely pleased with the program and have hired two employees who began working with our company as interns in the IfI program. This program has been great for us and has resulted in keeping graduates from leaving our community.
“During our participation in the program our management skills have grown tremendously.”
I would definitely recommend participation in this program to other companies, because, the participants were well prepared, made positive contributions to the company with minimal directions, and it helps to build a stronger work force for Indiana.
