GK-12 in China:
Five GK-12 fellows and five
GK-12 middle school teachers
will spend a week working on
science inquiry with the
Jiangsu Institute of Education
and a local K-12 school. Each
fellow will undertake
collaborative research in a
Chinese university for at
least 2 weeks. Check out
blogs written by a teacher and a staff member and
read a short
synopsis of the trip.
This web site received the NSF GK-12 Web Site
Award for Promoting and
Disseminating GK-12

2009 GK-12 China Trip
Participants in the NSF-funded Indiana
Interdisciplinary GK-12 trip to China spent a week
visiting with science faculty working in K-12 teacher
education at the Jiangsu Institute of Education (JIE) in
Nanjing. This partnership formed at JIE partially results
from an Asian Initiative grant through International
Programs. The group also taught science to middle school
students using lesson plans they developed originally for
Indiana schools.
The former doctoral fellows then spent at least
two weeks at other Chinese universities, where
they collaborated with Chinese faculty on research related
directly to their graduate studies. We are pleased to report
that the grant funded five GK-12 fellows and five GK-12 middle
school teachers:
Jacqueline Doyle, doctoral student, Department of Biological Sciences
Mariah Veit Judd, doctoral candidate, Department of Biological Sciences
Helen Kang, doctoral candidate, Computer Graphics Technology Department
Jianming Li, Ph.D., post-doctoral research associate,
Department of Basic Medical Sciences and Center for Paralysis Research
Leo Studach, doctoral student, Department of Basic Medical Sciences
Shelly Buck, 8th grade math teacher, Klondike Middle School
Sarah Felde, 7th grade math teacher, Lafayette Tecumseh Junior High School
Melissa George, Ph.D., 8th grade science specialist,
Lafayette Tecumseh Junior High School
Martin Hale, 6th grade science teacher, Frankfort Middle School
Susan Nail, 7th grade science teacher, Klondike Middle School

We are pleased to report that the grant funded four former
participants and a current Purdue faculty member:
Jillian Detwiler, doctoral candidate, Department of Biological Sciences
Jianming Li, doctoral candidate, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering
Jody Riskowski, assistant professor, University of Texas at El Paso
Andrea Blocher, science teacher, Lafayette Tecumseh Junior High School
Lynn Bryan, professor, Department of Curriculum & Instruction and Department of Physics
