Children should be tested at 12 months and again at 24 months. When a child lives in an area where lead poisoning is common or in an older run-down home he or she should be tested earlier and more often. People who work in areas where lead is used or have hobbies that deal with lead need to be tested regularly.
Testing can be conducted by hospitals or clinics. Many areas of the country offer free testing for children with elevated risk of lead poisoning. You should check with your local health department for information about lead screening programs. A blood test for lead should cost about $30. It is important to request a direct blood test for lead, NOT an EP test, which is not always accurate at lower levels.
