Hazardous waste is material that is harmful to either the environment or to people's health. Hazardous waste requires special handling and disposal procedures to avoid contamination of the environment.
A very specific and lengthy description of hazardous wastes is available in the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). There are two ways a waste may be brought into the hazardous waste regulatory system: listing, and identification through characteristics.
