The BBC anticipates growing opportunities for grant programs in Nanomedicine Center initiatives based upon NIH's new strategic focus (NIH
roadmap http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/initiatives.asp and NCI http://nano.cancer.gov).
In response, the Bindley Bioscience Center and the Birck Nanotechnology Center are developing sponsored research activities that are program
based and linked to Nanomedicine at Purdue. These efforts will also be linked to the Purdue Cancer Center research activities and developed
as a cooperative effort to enhance the multi-investigator/multi-disciplinary research activities on campus.
As part of the developing organizational structure in this area, the newest technology Research Core for Bionanotechnology is being formed
thanks to the efforts of a number of faculty on campus including Rashid Bashir, Don Bergstrom, Alex Wei, V. Jo Davisson, Albena Ivanisevic,
David Janes, Demir Akin, Çagri A. Savran Chelsey Baertsch, Arvind Raman . The laboratories and facilities in this new Core will be housed
and developed under both the Birck and Bindley Centers.
As part of this effort, the Bindley Bioscience Center and the Birck Nanotechnology Center hosted a full day "Linking Bio-Nano" Symposium
held at Stewart Center on July 26, 2004. Rashid Bashir (Electrical and Computer Engineering) coordinated this event in which 16 research
scientists from 3 universities shared their expertise and interests with over 200 participants from 5 states, including Massachusetts, Texas,
Illinois, Indiana, and Maryland. This symposium not only stimulated new ideas and ways of thinking about linking biology and nanotechnology,
it also generated momentum for discussion about the new Nanomedicine Research Theme at the University and facilitated by Discovery Park
Centers (Bindley and Birck). For information about how to obtain a full account of the meeting proceedings, visit the BBC website.
