"Remembering"
Sept.
11, 2001, will be remembered as one of the most shocking days in American history.
Armed terrorists hijacked four passenger jets and used them as weapons against
the United States. The attacks destroyed the World Trade Center, damaged the
Pentagon and killed more than 3,000 people. Hoosiers, along with countless Americans,
were devastated by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. Valiantly, communities
came together and proved themselves to be heroic even in the midst
of personal tragedy.

--------------------
"Responding"
Indiana Task Force 1’s team of 62 search-and-rescue specialists left Indianapolis
shortly after 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 for the 16-hour trip to New York with three
semi-trailer trucks carrying tools and equipment along with two command vehicles.
Several Indiana communities were represented. The team, organized
by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was made up physicians, paramedics,
engineers and damage structure specialists as well as search-dog handlers. The
team was the first to try out remote-control robots that use cameras to search
through wreckage.

"Building Community"
Post
9/11 activities saw communities banding together in ways never
seen before. Americans gave blood, secured our homeland, participated in vigils
and put their own lives on the line as they preserved a free America.
On the first anniversary of the attacks, Hoosier Muslims and Christians came
together to repair houses and neighborhoods--building those bonds of understanding
that make all of our communities stronger.

"Reaching Tomorrow's Heroes"
We need heroes in our lives. We need people we can look up to and admire; people
who can inspire us to do better than we have done; to be more than we are; to
work harder than we ever have before. Sometimes heroism is quiet. Sometimes
it is simple. Sometimes it is just one person stepping up to help another in
a time of need. We can all be heroes. We all have within us the power to be
a hero in someone else's life. There is great kindness inside us all. We must
let it out to do great things in the lives of others. The world changed forever
on Sept. 11. It is now up to us to carry on and ensure that this change is for
the better.
Purdue President Martin C. Jischke - Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002

"Leading Indiana"
Today, I challenge you as I challenge myself: Tell your children, and other
young people, the stories of the heroes who stood in the midst of destruction
to risk and, in too many cases, to give their lives to help others get to safety.
Tell your children the stories of the officers who ran into the fire to help
as others rushed out.
Tell them the stories of the ordinary Americans on Flight 93 who overcame terrorists
on a suicide mission so that others would not die.
And tell them of the people who found other ways to help, who reached out to
their neighbors to rebuild a nation that will never fall to attacks of hate
and who made sure that our foundation remains strong, that our hearts remain
open and that our land remains free. These are the stories of heroes.
Governor Frank O’Bannon - Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002

"Building the Future"
The proposed Indiana Center for Cultural Exchange will build bridges of mutual
understanding, professional cooperation and educational exchange between the
United States and the Muslim world. This unique and comprehensive statewide
initiative will include Indiana University, Purdue University, the University
of Notre Dame and the Indiana-based Islamic Society of North America. The schools
of Agriculture, Business, Education, Engineering, Law, Liberal Arts, Medicine,
Nursing, Pharmacy, Public and Environmental Affairs, Science, Technology and
Veterinary Medicine will use their many resources through programs of international
cooperation to create a more united world community.
--------------------
"Peacebuilding"
The Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at the University
of Notre Dame conducts research, education and policy programs exploring the
causes of religious and ethnic violence and identifying strategies for effective
peacebuilding. Students from around the world study peacebuilding in the Kroc
Institute's graduate program in peace studies to contribute to a more peaceful
world community.
The Kroc Institute's Program in Religion, Conflict and Peacebuilding examines
the complex roles of religious communities and movements in contemporary conflicts.
Through this interdisciplinary and inter-faith initiative, the Kroc Institute
hopes to strengthen the potential for peacebuilding within all religious traditions.

--------------------
"Educating Globally"
Indiana University has one of the most comprehensive and diverse international
programs in the United States that fosters cross-cultural understanding and
international education and cooperation. Indiana University's Middle Eastern
and Islamic Studies Program is an internationally respected resource for learning
about the complexities of the Near East and the Muslim world.
--------------------
"Cooperating Internationally"
Purdue University is engaged in numerous joint initiatives with 32 universities
in 16 Muslim countries. The School of Engineering is building distance-learning
centers in Kabul, Afghanistan. The School of Agriculture is engaged in water
and agriculture projects in such countries as Egypt, Jordan, Tunisia, Afghanistan,
Lebanon, Thailand, the Philippines and Bangladesh.
