The primary focus of Dev’s research is to significantly contribute to our understanding of the Earth system and the dynamic role of coupled land surface processes on weather and regional climate. His specific research interest is to represent vegetation feedbacks for improved land - atmosphere interactions, and the associated physics/dynamics in the coupled models. In particular, focus has been to investigate the hitherto poorly understood impact of agricultural and urban landscapes and land surface feedbacks, and to investigate to what extent does the land surface variability affect the initiation and intensification of heavy convective precipitation, surface temperatures trends and regional climate?

Dr. Niyogi’s research has four inter-related themes: (1) Investigation of the effects of land surface processes on weather and climate. This involves the detection of the land surface/land use land cover change signature within climate observations; as well as studying the role of land surface processes on short term weather such as mesoscale convection and heavy precipitation. (2) Development and assimilation of satellite datasets for enhanced land surface representation and improving regional/mesoscale weather forecast models. (3) Incorporation of the effects of agricultural and urban landscapes in weather forecast, surface hydrology, and environmental/air quality models. (4) Synthesis of land – atmosphere interactions over United States, and the tropical Indian Monsoon Region as part of the regional and global climate systems.
