Our research interest is in Bionanotechnology. Our theme is multiplex mechanistic sensing and quantification of molecular markers, genetic material, DNA modifications, and drug localization in biological systems. While doing so, we cherish the moments that are joyous and try to learn from those that are painful”

Dr. Irudayaraj’s group represents the Bionanotechnology efforts of the Bindley Bioscience Center and the Birck Nanotechnology Center. Dr. Irudayaraj is also the Deputy Director of Bindley Bioscience Center, co-Leader of the Molecular sensing and drug discovery core of the Purdue Center for Cancer Research.

The basis of Dr. Irudayaraj’s work stems from a strong background and skills developed in the areas of engineering, biosciences, and computer sciences. Their group is interested in developing multifunctional nanomaterials and single molecule technologies to understand the etiology of diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Specifically, their interest is in exploring intracellular mechanisms related to epigenetics, phosphorylation, and protein aggregation in live cells. Core technologies developed are single molecule fluorescence, Super-resolution second harmonic generation imaging, Plasmon resonance imaging, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for detection, quantification, and structure elucidation.

As a Deputy Director of Bindley Bioscience Center (BBC), Dr. Irudayaraj provides leadership and vision to the scientific core of BBC. He is also responsible for establishing campus-wide collaborations to engage the Bindley Bioscience Center to develop transformative technologies for life science and bioengineering related problems. He has published over 200 refereed publications and is a member of the Biophysical Society, Biological Engineering, and American Chemical Society. He is an active participant in review panels of NIH, NSF, DOE, DOD among others international agencies. Prior to Purdue, Dr. Irudayaraj was an Associate Professor at The Pennsylvania State University, a visiting faculty (2004-2005) at the School of Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell University, and an Assistant Professor at Utah State University.
