Core Start Program 2016 - 2017

Request for Applications

Background

The Purdue Institute of Inflammation, Immunology and Infectious Disease (PI4D) aims to be responsive to the major funding objectives at NIH in the areas of infectious disease and immunology-related research.  Recent advances in immunotherapy of cancer, infectious disease outbreaks and an increase in the extent of inflammatory diseases continue to drive funding directions.  The purpose of the PI4D Core Start program is to provide funding for scientific projects of high merit and act as a link to generate extramural funding or generate novel intellectual property (IP).  The funding is meant to form lasting collaborative teams between PI4D members/affiliates with core facility scientists to be poised for extramural funding or IP in the areas of immunotherapy, infectious disease, inflammation and immunology.

Description

The PI4D Core Start opportunity offers $10,000 for use of one or more core facilities at Purdue University (West Lafayette campus only) for a one year project-period. Up to 7 projects will be awarded and proposals will be judged on the likelihood of generating new IP or extramural grant support along with scientific merit. The application must make clear how an award will contribute to future extramural funding or IP generation.

Proposals will be judged by the specifics regarding the anticipated scope and extramural sources of funding for subsequent collaborative projects. The committee must be able to discern why pilot funding is needed in addition to funds currently available to the PI. In some cases it is important that the application make clear what will be done by the core and what will be done by the investigator’s laboratory. Investigator’s laboratory expenses such as supplies and salaries are not allowed for this mechanism. Funding is for the direct use of core facilities services only.

The two-page “Research Plan” section of successful applications should clearly describe how pilot funding from this mechanism will aid in either “jump-starting” a project or strengthening a planned or pending submission. It is emphasized that, this section may not exceed two single spaced 8.5 x 11 pages with 1/2 inch margins on all sides. Font must be Arial of 11 points or larger.

Within the 'Research Plan' section, applicants are asked to include a subsection entitle 'External Funding Strategy' by which they will outline steps towards procuring external funding using the currently proposed project as a pilot. Proposing specific external funding mechanisms is highly recommended.  Applicants should include the specific aims for the subsequent proposed project that will seek the external funding.

Application

PI4D members/affiliates are eligible to apply to this funding mechanism.  An electronic application can be submitted HERE.   Applications are due by Monday, April 4th 2016. A letter of support from the core facility director will be required.  Questions about this opportunity should be directed towards Tommy Sors - tsors@purdue.edu.
