Biochemistry professor who is developing blood test to detect early stage breast cancer wins Purdue commercialization award

W. Andy Tao, a biochemistry professor in the College of Agriculture who discovered a method to detect and monitor breast cancer using a simple blood test and bladder cancer using a urine test, is the 2017 recipient of the Outstanding Commercialization Award for Purdue University faculty.

Catherine Hill is a medical entomologist in Purdue’s Department of Entomology. She is at work to develop new technology to fight the growing problem of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes like Dengue, Zika, and West Nile.

Expanding Life Sciences: Purdue University

Purdue University is a major leader in the life sciences with emphasis on the biological sciences. With their recent $250 million investment in the life sciences, Purdue has created three new Life Sciences Institutes that build upon their strength in the biological sciences. At the Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience (PIIN), researchers are leveraging the university’s expertise in neuroscienceand engineering to unravel the mysteries of the brain. Spanning 25 departments across six colleges, Purdue’s neuroscience enterprise includes more than 100 faculty engaged in neuroscience-related research. The institute’s role is to encourage and exploit synergies across disciplines on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus.
