Cancer Care Engineering IU Health Arnett
Clinical Outreach Purdue University
Although Purdue University is not affiliated with a medical school, it is in close proximity to two community hospitals with which it has established a research relationship. These hospitals serve as the basis of a regional medical hub that services the great Lafayette area where Purdue is located. Subject populations at major academic medical centers reflect the tertiary care nature of these centers and many times do not represent the general population, which can be captured at community-based hospitals. Purdue University in partnership with the local hospitals has created a “Purdue Community Institutional Review Board” to facilitate clinical research at Purdue University. This IRB streamlines regulatory requirements by utilizing a single IRB to review research projects involving Purdue University and the local healthcare community.
Additionally, Purdue has launched a major initiative to establish discovery clinical trials with IU Health Arnett. This effort involves both Purdue faculty and staff and IU Health Arnett physicians and hospital administrators as well as a dedicated clinical trials coordinator who is housed at IU Health. As part of this effort, Purdue and IU Health are partnering with the national Research Advocacy Network to recruit and train local advocates to champion participation in community hospital-based clinical trials. These advocates are not project specific, but advocates for clinical research in general and available to all Purdue IU Health Arnett joint projects.
