The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s (UIUC) top-ranked Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) Department has a strong tradition of multi-disciplinary research and an effective theory-to-application approach in conducting research. CEE’s transportation faculty provides research expertise in materials, pavement, traffic safety, transportation systems operation, logistics, highway, railroad, and infrastructure. UIUC's Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) represents an innovative partnership between the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). At UIUC, transportation facilities at the Newmark Civil Engineering Laboratory building, the Advanced Transportation Research and Engineering Laboratory (ATREL), and Traffic Operations Laboratory (TOL) offer advanced computer resources, well-equipped laboratories and experienced personnel capable of high-level research activities. ATREL is a unique and comprehensive transportation research, educational, and testing laboratory located on 47 acres of land just 15 miles north of the UIUC Campus. It includes 60,000 square feet of laboratories and classrooms. The TOL houses sophisticated testing equipment for evaluation of traffic signal components and transportation control/safety devices. The large land area in the ATREL complex lends itself to full scale testing of highway procedures and products and offers opportunities for developing, evaluating, and testing full-scale pavement and railroad components and various transportation safety devices.
