Purpose of Research: You have been invited to participate in a research study quantifying benefits from real-time information. By conducting this study, we hope to better understand the traveler behavioral response towards real-time traveler information. Your participation would be greatly appreciated as it can contribute to the development of better methods to provide information to travelers.

Specific Procedures: Should you decide to participate, you will:

Step 1: You are required to complete a one-time survey, which asks for your socio-economic characteristics, daily travel behavior, trip information usage, and medical history. You are advised not to participate in this experiment if you have a medical history of severe motion sickness.

Step 2: After you are selected to participate, we will schedule a time with you to come to the NEXTRANS Center and complete an experiment in a driving simulator. The first session of the experiment is a practice session. You will take multiple short runs in the driving simulator to become familiar with the driving simulator, the map and routes of the experimental network. If you feel any forms of simulator sickness (nausea, headache, sickness, dizziness, or disorientation) during practice session, you can withdraw from participation.

Step 3: Once you are familiar with the driving simulator and are comfortable with driving from an origin to a destination, you will be required to complete multiple experimental driving runs. The number of experimental driving runs will depend on the travel time between the assigned origin and destination, and the level of familiarity. In each run, you will face different levels of credible real-time traffic information.

Step 4: After each driving simulator run, you will take a five-minute break. During the break, you will fill out a post-experiment survey, which asks your perception of familiarity with the network, designated route, and trust in information.

Step 5: You will be suggested to stay at the experiment site for 30 minutes to 1 hour before you drive or to ask somebody to pick them up. The purpose is to avoid the possibility that you may not be adequately recalibrated to real-world driving or in condition to perfectly operate you vehicle.

The total time required, including practice session, experimental driving runs, and breaks between consecutive driving runs, will not exceed four hours. If you agree to participate you can withdraw from participation at any time without penalty.
