Physical Sciences, Engineering & Cancer Workshop

A Physical Sciences, Engineering & Cancer Workshop will be held on Dec. 6, 2013, 1-4:30 pm, MGRN 121 on the Purdue campus. The workshop is open to to all faculty, post-docs and students interested in learning more about key clinical questions in oncology and identifying Purdue technologies that could be of use. Faculty in physical sciences and engineering are invited to participate in a poster session following the clinical presentations. Faculty must register (firstname.lastname@example.org) by November 30, 2013 to reserve a poster board.
Five oncology clinicians from the IU Simon Cancer Center will address the following questions as they relate to theri clincial experiences:
• Are you faced with bottlenecks that "new" technologies might be able to remove? What are the bottlenecks?
• What information would you like to know about a patient, but don’t know of a technology to obtain the information?
• What current experimental technologies in clinical research seem inadequate and need improvement?
• Which biological/medical problems can benefit from detection and analysis of both whole cells and molecular markers isolated from the same sample?

Michael Ladisch, distinguished professor of agricultural and biological engineering at Purdue University, has been appointed to the board of directors of the newly created Foundation for Food and Agricultural Research, which Congress authorized in the 2014 farm bill. Ladisch, who also is director of Purdue's Laboratory of Renewable Resources Engineering and holds a joint appointment in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, is one of 15 board members appointed by U.S. agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on July 23.Read Full Story

Seven Purdue faculty members have been selected to the New York-based Thomson Reuters Corp's. list of "The World's Most Influential Scientific Minds: 2014" The honor recognizes researchers around the world who have earned distinction by publishing the highest number of articles that rank among the most frequently cited by fellow researchers, according to Thomson Reuters. A Purdue Research Park-based company whose one-step, patent-pending technology could improve the efficiency of alternative fuels and the production of fragrance products has received funding from the National Science Foundation. Spero Energy Inc. has received a six-month SBIR Phase I grant from the NSF worth $150,000. Its technology is based on Purdue University intellectual property.Read Full Story
